European Programme for Integration and Migration

Since 2005, 14 foundations have come together through EPIM in a unique cooperative effort to jointly fund European migration organisations, with the goal of building capacity and developing pan-European networks to enhance their ability to influence critical elements of integration policy. Between 2005 and 2011, a total of 3.6 million euro has been allocated through the EPIM programme including 31 grants to 24 grantees – both at European and national level. EPIM seeks to do more than just provide financial support. It is also an active partner working closely with its grantees. Activities have included workshops on communications, advocacy, networking, evaluation and impact assessment; joint learning initiatives tailored to the specific needs of groups of grantees; the provision of key infor-mation on EU policy developments; and helping grantees to partner with new organisations to extend their reach.
EPIM supports and strengthens NGOs active on migration and integration issues at the European level in order to:

Uphold and defend the European commitment to Universal Human Rights and social justice, to ensure the dignity of all people in the European Union;
Promote a pragmatic approach to European and national policies on migration and integration;
Influence, through a grants programme, EU policies and their national implementation in one of three focus areas.

Focus area 1 – Asylum seekers
Projects aim to:
- ensure that European Asylum Policy improves standards and ensures due process and fair determination procedures for all those seeking protection; and/or
- ensure that immigrant detention is used only as a tool of last resort.

Focus area 2 – Undocumented Migrants
Projects aim to:
- protect those undocumented migrants who are at risk of destitution and exploitation, including through access to justice and essential services that guarantee human dignity.

Focus area 3 – Equality, integration and social Inclusion of vulnerable* migrants
Projects aim to:
- promote the social inclusion of those migrants at greatest risk of marginalisation;
and/or
- promote their economic empowerment, civic participation and social responsibility – both through targeted programmes and through their inclusion in mainstream social policies.
